EXTREME ROCK CLIMBING ACCIDENT EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR of AAC, 50
Avid rock climber, community leader, author, and Executive Director of the American Alpine Club, Phil Powers plummeted 70 feet during a group rock climb last May, according to Rock and Ice Magazine. Landing on his left side, he suffered extensive injuries, including broken bones, a collapsed lung, and a punctured diaphragm. Immediately, a series of surgeries ensued.
"As is common when multiple injuries are sustained, doctors are presently monitoring Powers' condition closely and acting conservatively", said a statement from AAC.
Powers, 50, has led dozens of high-risk , high altitude expeditions to South America, Alaska, Pakistan, and other locations without supplemental oxygen, making him an extreme Accidental Death & Disability candidate.
